Dr. John Manzella Scholarship

for Second Opportunities

Students with a parent or guardian who has been incarcerated can apply for the Dr. John Manzella Scholarship for Second Opportunities here. A monetary prize of $1,000 will be awarded to a hardworking student who has or has had a parent in the prison system. A short essay is required for entry, and we select the contest winner based on the content written in the submitted essay.

Scholarship Overview

Dr. John Manzella understands how difficult it is to earn a degree, especially when dealing with a parent who has been incarcerated. He looks forward now to the chance to give a star student an opportunity through this scholarship award.

We officially announce that The Dr. John Manzella Scholarship for Second Opportunities is available for the children of incarcerated parents. Serving students in the United States, the scholarship fund will grant a monetary award of $1000 to a deserving student who has had a parent in the prison system. We also aim to raise awareness to the hardships that these young students must go through on their path to earning a degree.

Criteria

To be eligible to apply, student should be currently enrolled at a university in the United States who has overcome adversity due to a family member being incarcerated.  Also eligible are high school students in the same situation that will attend university in the future.

The scholarship will be awarded based on an essay contest.  One winner will be selected with the best essay of less than 1000 words answering the following:  

“Describe an issue with the criminal justice system today, and how it could be improved to reduce recidivism.”

Amount

One time award of $1,000

Deadline

The deadline to apply for the scholarship is June 15, 2023.

Winner Announced

The winner for the scholarship will be announced July 15, 2023.

Applicant should email their response to the essay question “Describe an issue with the criminal justice system today, and how it could be improved to reduce recidivism.” in Word Doc format to:  [email protected].
